Hymns offer comforting, meaningful words (based on scripture) set to glorious melodies. Often times, a hymn is the comfort we need in times of sorrow, or a hymn can display our happiness or thanks toward God.
Hymns are categorized according to content and by season. The melodies of these hymns often set the general mood for a church season. For example, Lenten hymns are often slow, and set in a minor key. This makes them sound more mournful, which is appropriate as we mourn over the suffering that our sins have caused Jesus. However, Easter hymns have a joyful tone, celebrating our Risen Savior's victory over death, sin, and the power of Satan.
